These long skirts are beautiful, but not always handy, which is why these skirt lifters were invented. The skirt lifter was worn on the chataleine, so that the hem of the skirt could be pinched and held up so that the skirt did not get dirty with mud from the dirty Victorian streets.
This copper Victorian skirt lifter has a triangular copper slide at the top, which when pushed upwards clamps the small round discs at the bottom together with the hem of the skirt in between so that it can be properly clamped.
